Low-Level Laser Therapy

Low-level laser (photobiomodulation) to help reduce pain and inflammation and support tissue healing.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light applied to the skin to help reduce pain and inflammation and support tissue healing. It is non-invasive and painless, and is used as one part of a broader physiotherapy plan.

Conditions we treat

  • Tendinopathies
  • Joint pain and osteoarthritis-related pain
  • Soft-tissue injuries
  • Muscle strains
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Slow-healing or persistent pain

How does it work?

Light energy is absorbed by the tissues, which may help:

  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce local inflammation
  • Support tissue repair and healing
  • Improve tolerance to rehabilitation exercise

LLLT is most useful combined with exercise and the rest of your treatment plan.

What to expect

A handheld device is applied to the treatment area for a few minutes. The treatment is painless — you typically feel little or nothing during it. It is combined with the other elements of your physiotherapy plan.

Is it right for you?

Your physiotherapist will complete an assessment to determine whether LLLT is appropriate. It may not be recommended over certain areas or conditions — for example, over active cancers, or directly over the eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Will I feel anything?

Low-level laser therapy is painless — most people feel little or nothing during treatment.

Is it safe?

It's non-invasive and generally well tolerated. Your physiotherapist screens for areas or conditions where it isn't recommended before using it.

Is it a stand-alone cure?

No. LLLT is one tool used to support your recovery, and works best combined with exercise and hands-on treatment.
