Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training is a rehabilitation technique that uses a specialized cuff applied to the upper arm or upper leg while performing low-load exercises. The cuff partially restricts blood flow, allowing patients to gain strength and muscle adaptations using significantly lighter weights than traditional resistance training.

BFR is always performed under the guidance of a trained healthcare professional to ensure safety and appropriate cuff pressure.

How does it work?

By partially restricting blood flow during low-load exercise, BFR helps stimulate muscle adaptations similar to those achieved with heavier resistance training. Potential benefits include:

  • Increased muscle strength
  • Improved muscle size (hypertrophy)
  • Reduced muscle loss during recovery
  • Improved functional performance
  • Earlier progression during rehabilitation when heavy loading is not appropriate

BFR is most effective when combined with an individualized exercise program.

What to expect

A specialized cuff is placed around your arm or leg and inflated to a personalized pressure based on your circulation. You'll then perform guided exercises using light resistance. Sessions typically last 20–30 minutes, depending on your goals. During treatment it is normal to experience muscle fatigue or a burning sensation similar to an intense workout.

Is it right for you?

Your physiotherapist will complete a thorough assessment and medical screening before recommending BFR. Certain medical conditions — such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, active blood clots, severe vascular disease or other circulatory disorders — may make BFR unsuitable.

Is BFR safe?

When applied by a trained clinician with appropriate screening and personalized cuff pressure, BFR is generally well tolerated. Some conditions make it unsuitable, which is why a medical screening is done first.

Will it hurt?

You'll typically feel muscle fatigue or a burning sensation similar to an intense workout — not sharp pain. Pressure is set to a level that's right for you.

Why use light weights?

BFR lets you build strength with lighter loads, which is especially useful early in rehab or when heavy lifting isn't yet appropriate for your injury or surgery.
